Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with methods of surface modification and functionalization of carbon nanomaterials. Students will be able to apply and evaluate efficiency of these procedures in solving their dissertation.

Summary
In this course, students will gain an overview of the possibilities of surface modification of carbon nanomaterials and methods of covalent and non-covalent functionalizations. The methods will be supplemented by examples of suitable applications. Methods for characterization of final products will be presented.

Way of continuous check of knowledge in the course of semester
Verification of the achieved study results will be carried out by evaluation of the quality of the seminar work and subsequently by an oral exam.

Surface modification and functionalization of carbon nanomaterials in general
Reaction mechanisms and related changes in the structure and properties of carbon nanomaterials
Hydrogenation, fluorination, oxidation, reaction with free radicals
Covalent functionalization
Functionalization by cationic, anionic and radical polymerization - ATRP, RAFT, NMRP, ROP methods
Functionalization by "click" chemical reactions
Cycloaddition reactions using biomolecules, macromolecules and metal nanohybridges
Electrochemical polymerization
Non-covalent functionalization - hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions
