Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

Student will be able to classify solids according to binding and structural criteria, describe the crystal structure using symmetry elements and operations of symmetry, determine Miller indices and interplanar distances, classify silicates and phyllosilicates, demonstrate the influence of composition and structure of silicates on properties, discuss the practical use of phyllosilicates.

Summary

The aim of the course is to provide a deeper insight into the composition and structure of silicates. After the first, more general part, focused on the basic classification of solids, types of crystalline structures and approaches to their description, the student will be acquainted with the problems of chemical bonds in silicates, with the crystallochemical classification of silicate polyhedra and silicates, and with the relationship between structure and chemical properties of silicates. Special attention will be paid to phyllosilicates and their individual groups, not only from the structural-chemical point of view, but also the possibilities of practical use of phyllosilicates will be discussed.
