The student will be able to explain the different properties between nanomaterials and macroscopic materials and use this knowledge in the synthesis and application of nanostructures in various fields (medicine, catalysis, sensors, etc.)

Summary
Předmět nabízí ucelený přehled o výrazně odlišném chování a vlastnostech nanostruktur ve srovnání s klasickými "objemovými" materiály. Je analyzovaná morfologie a velikost nanočástic, a s ní související poměr povrch/objem ve vztahu ke kohezní energii – efekt nevyvázaných povrchových atomů roste se snižováním velikosti. Dále je vysvětlena problematika tepelných vibrací atomů a teorie tání v korelaci s velikostí kohezní energie, mechanismus Ostwaldova zrání a závislost reaktivity nanočástic na křivosti povrchu. Samostatná pozornost je věnována procesům klasteringu a precipitace nanočástic z kapalných roztoků při srážecích reakcích, a Weimarnovu pravidlu.

Subject syllabus:
1. Morphology of nanoparticles - form-factor, dependence of surface/volume ratio on particle size
2. Cohesive energy of particles - surface atom effect and its dependence on size
3. Thermal vibration of atoms and melting theory - correlation with size of cohesive energy
4. Solubility dependence on particle surface curvature - Ostwald ripening
5. particle reactivity - dependence on size and surface curvature
6. Clustering and precipitation of nanoparticles from liquid solutions
7. Thermal capacities of nanomaterials
